command line updated

Neal Stephenson has granted permission for the "in the beginning was the command line" to be updated. Enjoy. I still have quibbles, but it's still the best intro to UI design and Mediation of experiance on the planet.

That's one long read, which I can't finish now. But it does bring back vague memories to this tech-dumb fool who somehow managed to have some contact with tech in his early years.

Strange -- I interacted with a command line box before I encountered a batch processor. A proto-geek friend of a relative brought a box home at Xmas, which he hooked up to the phone, and we played tic-tac-toe through a main frame in Ohio (we did banners too, all on a tractor-feed printer.) It wasn't until years later, when I was in college, that I dealt with a batch processor. Having messed with the other box, I found the batch processor to be cumbersome, stupid and boring.

Maybe it was my bass-ackwards introduction to computing which screwed up my appreciation for it. Or maybe it was just my lack of non-verbal skills. . . . .

It appears Sen Barbara Boxer stepped up to the plate to force a debate on the election:

Democrats to Force Debate on Ohio Results
Democrats to Force Debate on Ohio Election Results Before Congress Certifies Bush Win

I hear C-Span will carry the debate at 2 p.m. this afternoon.
