This might be the best article on the commoditization of software i've ever seen, and about the network being the computer and your real operating system, The Open Source Paradigm Shift by Tim O'Reilly. Dig it, you are already a Linux user, and probably a BSD user. You are already knee deep in such buzz words as web services, open standards, collaboarive software and open source software (your using it all right now). Read the article to see how we got to this point, and to get some idea what's important for the future. I do disagree with his criticism of open source (specifically the Free Software Foundation's GPL) licensing--I think his main points of building proprietary web applications on free/open source shoot down his own criticism, as well as his own profits from all the books he's published on free/open source software.

Ah, yes, the prodigal son has returned to the fold.
It is written that a Baal Teshuva is more righteous than the greatest Tzaddik.
So a Baal Teshuva who returns to Error is more evil than the Dark Lord himself.
There is a new Prince in Hell, and his name is Oakey.
