we may be down, but we're not out. yet.
UPDATE: weee!
we've switched over to the new server. i can tell the difference just from the way it responds to editing posts. i'll miss the little netwinder that has powered ffej.org for the past few years (along with many other sites,) and still remain a staunch advocate of small ubiquitis server appliances. but the little netwinder had a real problem running the perl scripts that run ffej.org and the email system we needed. so ben migrated us to a new box, with debian. oh yeah. feel the speed. later this week i'll take some time off to just poke through the box and see what's new in debian. we still haven't switched over to the new service provider though, so...
there may be an interruption in service today as we switch service providers. if you have any problems getting through to the page, feel free to go read slashdot.org, macdevcenter.om, deviantart.com, dissociatedpress.org, or news of the weird and/or straight dope on chireader.com. you'll be happier if you do. honest. dunno why anyone reads this shit any way.
(except for oakey, who's instructed to sleep it off, and feel better. happy birthday, belated.)
and i'd to thank ben once more for friendship above and beyond the call of duty. and winning sys adminage. Ben has the hacker nature. nuff said.
KC says elayne hurt her back...get well soon, kiddo.
lastly, katherine chronis is back in chicago for two more days, so bug her. ;-)
Slate magazine a microsoft rag, likes the new Palm Tungsten C.
the memory hole. a great site that tracks dissinformation and media manipulation. rad todays page for coverage of photoshopped images used to make crowds bigger, us troops making iraqis march naked, paragraphs cut from web versions of stories...good stuff stuff on how your world view is mediated. i found this story about journalists busted for looting by customs.
KKCS has suspended two Dj's for playing the Dixie Chicks. the station banned the Chicks when one of them said she was asshamed the president came form texas.

Did you really post that at 2am?
I went to bed around 1:30 I think, frustrated that the DNS changes hadn't propagated yet.
Looks like most things are working. I am concerned that I might blow away my email if pine and uw-imapd-ssl disagree on where to keep things.
I need to read some docs and source.
cd /usr/share/doc/uw-imapd
for i in *
do
zcat $i | less

Ah... CDT vs PDT

Oh yeah... the netwider was too fucking noisey!
It supposedly has a variable speed fan which only goes into hyperdrive when the thing gets hot, which for an ARM RISC machine shouldn't be very often.
The last time that machine got a kernel/release upgrade the fan seemed to stop doing it's slow speed thing. I need to open it up and see if it is caked with dust.
Ffej.org's ultimate home is this: http://www.mini-itx.com/store/hush.asp which will access the net through http://www.speakeasy.net/ which you should all subscribe to through http://www.speakeasy.net/refer/210859 in order to support your favorite domain.
This is going to be one classy box.

By the way... take a look at what you can do with a really small motherboard: http://www.mini-itx.com

yup. pseudo cdt. gave up trying to get it refreshed, it kept hanging in phone. woke up at 6am and it had rebuilt it self, and refreshed.. dunno why. the netwinder reallyhad a problem with perl...
spdifs! your wasting this box on pressurewave, it whould be down stairs connected to the stereo! once neil finishes his new version of Otto, you'll have to. a reminder: ram is cheap, and it helps FP less cpus. on the other hand, the via cpu is reacting better then i expected. it still has the fallacy lack of real floating point, like the arm, but the faster memory buss is making up for it. if this thing had an Athlon in it, it'd really rock. but then there would be fan noise...
very nice box. wil test it from another location later, as well as imap.

Just testing, to see if perhaps it doesn't take so long for a message to post.

Hey -- that was quick. Nice. Don't understand the technobabble, but the site works noticeably better.
Thanks, Ben abd Ffej.

damn.
earlier today the cellphone melted down. battery related, nothing major. then the pda batters in unit died. so i just got it restored from a backup-on the buss! andfound i couldn't get my mail. pop fails.
the cellphone won't do lmap...
will test this later, like noonish, and on the ibook.
no panic, yet.
neil's box died. no otto for awhile, he has to buy new mb power supply and cpu.

Cutover to Speakeasy.net has completed. Some of you might still have stale DNS entries either in your machine or in your ISP's DNS server. They'll get cleared out soon enough.
The uplink is now 3 times faster than it was with SBC/PacBell

The new box makes for quick, quick, quick. Good -- great job, guys!
