imusic
a comparison between apple's music store and Emusic, in which apple loses. didn't know they were still around...
the register, wsj, and others are reporting on the apple's new music store. in the first 18 hours they they sold over 275,000 songs, according to the register that was $100,000 profit for apple. which i find intersting, in light of the 99 cent per song charge, the lack of windows support, the DRM built in, and the lack of back catalog (as reported in previous posts links, no sex pistols and only one old beatle song.) neil and i both think the fee is too much: neil thinks they're selling for no discount whatsover, and should sell for 20-30 cents, i think 50. the lack of back catalog and indy tracks bothers me more. had i the means to set up an account with them, i would just to get the residents, fred frith, and other small label oddities that aren't availible at the mega music stores. it seems people are willing to pay for what in my mind is free: the aac encoded songs are about the same quality as what you hear on fm. i guess i'll just tape the radio for now.
let's see if this updates. hmmm, it did.
hey, slashdot just posted the sci am article on synesthesia...
brain privacy is the next frontier. you better believe the insurence companies and your employer will use this to bite your ass. hell, i already fail the pop sci questions they ask at interviews, with this, they'll lock me up...
this is too cool. wish i could see it. a canadian broadcasting company vid clip of young hippie draft dodger william "neuromancer" gibson in 1967, giving a tour of yorkville hippie district in ca...it's unfortunently in windows media format...

Hmmm... rebooting fixed the problem, which is not the right answer of course.

Who's Next cost $19.98 at Apple Music Store.
Do you think Apple will license their Music Store technology?
Posted by: Danny at May 2, 2003 10:21 AM
nothing to license. it's built out of their weblogic product, which is an app server that i never seem to be able to find on the website. wonder why ;-)
if you're thinking of getting bombco in the download biz, just take a look at the php-mysql stuff on freshmeat or sourceforge. some of the biz site stuff should be able to be kluged into what you want. i'd recomend using pay pall for your backend, but they just anounced they won't handle adult material anymore, despite having set up a system a while back to handle it. who knows what they'll cut out next?
if your wondering if they'll license your back catalog, i doubt it. they haven't aproached any of the indies, or wanted/been able to license any of the majors back catalog. you might look into emusic, or mp3.com. the later moved to a $200 buck a year charge for most bands a while ago, though. it's been almost a year since i was up there, some bands claimed to made 19-100 grand from the site.

You can download the apple DRM music files, burn a CD from them, then rip it to mp3... heheh..
